An institution is growing! During 2014 the Museum Liaunig is to be enlarged with reopening scheduled for May 2015
The moment has arrived! In spring, work commenced on extensive enlargements and modifications to the Museum Liaunig. These activities are once again taking place under the auspices of the tried and trusted “querkraft” architectural team from Vienna, and in accordance with its plans the museum is to be extended by approximately 2,500 m². From May 2015, additional underground facilities for the continually expanding collection, events and a museum shop, as well as an outdoor sculpture park will offer a unique art experience.
Equally singular is the private collection of contemporary Austrian art, belonging to the industrialist Herbert Liaunig and his family, which already includes over 3,000 items and forms the heart of the museum. Moreover, during the five years since the museum opened, the spectacular exhibition of African gold containing some 600 works has also proved to be a source of fascination.
The new concept now foresees the presentation of further collections from the areas of silver and historic glassware. In combination with temporary exhibitions and cultural events, the roughly 7,500 m² museum will thus become a modern, highly qualitative cultural centre and a lighthouse project that will illuminate both the surrounding region and far beyond.
